  • Encouraging good exercise, sleep, and food habits, among other things
  • Encouraging your child to make informed decisions, promoting a positive and joyful life

We want to help you and your kids develop healthy habits so that you can all lead long, active lives with strong muscles and beautiful smiles.

Uh Oh! It’s The Sugar Monster!

A good relationship with sugar early on is essential to oral and overall health!

Some pairings just make sense, like grilled cheese and tomato soup or…kids and sugar!

Dentists have always been wary of sugar because it fuels the bacteria that causes tooth decay. However, recent evidence suggests that sugar does much more damage than we previously thought. Not only does it destroy oral health, but high sugar intake has also been associated with a host of other significant health issues in both children and adults!

If we want to reduce the negative effects of sugar on oral health, we need to address diets that are high in sugar. The sooner we start talking about how to maintain a good relationship with sugar, the more effective our preventive measures will be.

What are dental sealants?

Although brushing and flossing gets rid of some food and plaque on your surfer’s teeth, it is more difficult to brush the molars completely.

The majority of cavities form on the back teeth, but you can prevent them with dental sealants. A dental sealant is a translucent polymer that is applied to the tooth surface to “keep out” pieces of food and plaque that can cause cavities. Dental sealants have been shown to reduce the risk of cavities by up to 80%.

As your child’s adult teeth come in, it’s the perfect opportunity to get sealants! From the ages of six and fourteen, children are most likely to benefit from sealants. They’re also usually covered by insurance, so please ask us about them during your next visit to Smile Surfers!

Are fluoride treatments necessary for my child?

Fluoride acts as a guardian for your child’s teeth, making the enamel stronger and decreasing the likelihood of cavities. Furthermore, it protects teeth from acid created by plaque and bacteria, reducing the chance of tooth decay.

Children, especially those under the age of 16 and who live in an area where public water isn’t supplemented with fluoride, should receive fluoride treatments.

How can I keep cavities away for good?

Along with preventive dental care, the most important thing you can do for your little surfer’s health is to encourage efficient hygiene habits.

Once your child’s first tooth pops up, bring them in to see our dental team and establish a routine of regular check-ups. This helps us ensure that we are teaching your little one about proper oral hygiene from an early age. We make it fun for kids while also incentivizing good behavior.

We’re always grateful when parents help their kids develop good habits at home! If you need some assistance, we’d love to give you suggestions, resources, and tips on encouraging your children to take care of their teeth.
